  • x - stands for 'for' or 'against' so I don't have to write it several times
  • EGx - Expected Goals x per hour
  • Expected goals - An approxemation of the number of goals that should be scored based shots.
        - each shot gets a different chance of going in (p)
        - Expected goals = SUM(p), just add up the percentages of all shots for/against
        - Simplification: If p=10% for all shots, then expected goals = 0.1*shots
  • Gx - Goals against per hour
  • SV% - shot quality neutral save percentage:
          = 1 - 0.1*GA/EGA
  • SQx - relative shot quality x
          This measures the difficulty of a given shot compared the the NHL average shot.
          For example a team who has a lot more 12' shots than 30' shots will have a higher SQx.
          = m*EGx/Sx
          m depends of situation (pp = 1/0.135, sh or ev = 1/0.085)
  • Sx - Shots x per hour
  • I greyed out the SQx and Sx columns because the more relavant information is captured in EGx
          that is to say:
          EGx = f(SQx, Sx)
          EQx = Goals/hour = Sx*SQA = Sx*(1/m)*EQx/Sx = (1/m)*EGx or
  • Also:
          SV% = f(GA, EGA)
          SV% = 1 - 0.1*GA/EGA
  • SQx and Sx are good to figure out where the problem is though.
          For example if a team has a low EGF it could be because their not getting shots
          or their not getting good shots [or both].
  • Technically speaking EGF = GF, so long as opposition is reasonably average,
          but it should be mentioned that Even with a quarter of the season played
          the expected error in the GF/hour rates are off by 0.8 Goals per hour
          (95% Confidence interval), or about 40%, but my EQF should be off by 10%
          (Assuming my shot statistics are perfect, which they're not). By the end of
          the season this falls to 14% for GF and 5% for EGF
